The Neotropical Orphninae genus Paraegidium Vulcano et al. is revised. Five new species are described: Paraegidium monneorum sp. nov., Paraegidium barretoi sp. nov., Paraegidium pokornyi sp. nov., Paraegidium howdeni sp. nov., and Paraegidium oliveirai sp. nov. The subfamily Orphninae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) is reviewed from Madagascar. A total of four genera and 39 species were found, all being endemic to the island. The following five new species are described: Triodontus ankarafantsikae, Triodontus lemoulti, Triodontus viettei, Triodontus fairmairei, and Triodontus inexpectatus. Lectotypes are designated for Orphnus nitidulus Guérin-Méneville, 1844 and Orphnidius modestus Benderitter, 1914. The following new synonymies are proposed: Orphnus nigrita Brancsik, 1893 is synonym of Triodontus hova (Fairmaire, 1868); Triodontus occidentalis Paulian, 1977 and Orphnus obsoletus Brancsik, 1893 are synonyms of Triodontus nitidulus (Guérin-Méneville, 1844); Triodontus vadoni Paulian, 1977 and Triodontus perrotorum Paulian, 1977 are synonyms of Triodontus owas Westwood, 1852.Keys, descriptions, illustrations of habitus and male genitalia, and distributional records maps are given for all species.

Frolov, A. V. & Akhmetova, L. A. 2016. Revision of the subgenus Orphnus (Phornus) (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Orphninae). European Journal of Taxonomy 241: 1–20

The Afrotropical subgenus Phornus Paulian of the genus Orphnus Macleay is revised and currently comprises six species. Four new species are described: Orphnus renaudi, Orphnus valeriae,Orphnus ferrierei, and Orphnus parastrangulatus. The subgenus is characterized by the coarse stridulatory field, sclerotized plate on the second abdominal sternite near plectrum, absence of the pronotal lateral processes in males, rounded apices of the parameres and endophallus without armature, although some of these characters differ in O. giganteus. Symphysocery is reported for the first time for members of the Orphninae. In O. giganteus, the majority of specimens have malformed antennomeres. Four of the six species of Phornus are brachypterous and all species except for O. giganteus Paulian are known only from males. A key to Phornus species and a map of their localities are provided.

Examination of the material housed in the Museum of Natural History of Humboldt-Universität, Berlin, Germany (ZMHUB), revealed a series of brachypterous Orphnus beetles belonging to an undescribed species.

Rediscovery of the enigmatic Stenosternus costatus from São Tomé Island

Stenosternus Karsch, 1881 is one of the least-known genera of the Orphninae scarab beetles. It was described from a single specimen of the odd-looking S. costatus Karsch, 1881, from the island of São Tomé, Gulf of Guinea, West Africa. Since then, no more findings of S. costatus have been reported... We discovered additional specimens of both sexes of S. costatus housed in the Museo Civico di Genova, Genova, Italy (MCGI) and California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco, California, United States of America (CASC). In this note we describe a female of S. costatus and discuss the species distribution and the taxonomic position of the genus.

New data on the rare Afrotropical scarab beetles Orphnus drumonti and Delopleurus naviauxi

Frolov, A. V. & Akhmetova, L. A. 2015. New data on the rare Afrotropical scarab beetles Orphnus drumonti Frolov and Delopleurus naviauxi Frolov et Cambefort (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Orphninae and Scarabaeinae). Biodiversity Data Journal, 3: e5444.

The scarab beetle genera Orphnus Macleay and Delopleurus Boheman are most speciose in the Afrotropical region. However, a number of species are only known from type specimens, sometimes only from one sex. New locality records of Orphnus drumonti Frolov (Orphninae) and Delopleurus naviauxi Frolov et Cambefort (Scarabaeinae) are given. The previously unknown female of the former and male of the latter species are described.

An annotated list of 183 species of the dung-beetle tribe Aphodiini of the Russian fauna is given. The highest species diversity is characteristic of the southern mountainous regions of the country, the richest local faunas being known from the Lower Volga area. The greatest numbers of species are known from the steppe and broadleaved forest zones and from the nemoral types of altitudinal zonation of vegetation. The bulk of the fauna is formed by the species with wide ranges; 111 species occur in two or more landscape zones or altitudinal zonation types. Six groups of faunistically similar zoogeographic provinces are distinguished within the territory of Russia.

A review of scarabs of subgenus Plagiogonus, genus Aphodius, of Russia and neighboring countries

Akhmetova, L.A. 2009. A review of scarabs of the subgenus Plagiogonus Mulsant, genus Aphodius Illiger (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae), of the fauna of Russia and neighboring countries. Entomological Review, 89(4): 428-436.

Abstract—A review of the scarab subgenus Plagiogonus Mulsant, genus Aphodius Illiger, of the fauna of Russia and adjacent countries is given, with a key to the species and data on their distribution. Two species names, Aphodius reitteri D. Koshantschikow, 1894 and A. burgaltaicus Csiki, 1901, are restored from synonyms. Two new synonymies are established: A. chan Endrödi, 1967 = A. peregii Endrödi, 1983, syn. n.; A. reitteri D. Koshantschikow, 1894 = A. kricheldorffi W. Koschantschikov, 1910, syn. n. Neotype of A. culminarius Reitter, 1900 and lectotype of A. burgaltaicus are designated, and redescriptions of these species are given. A secondary sex character of Plagiogonus is found.
